Architecture Project
    Salalah, Oman
KABC developed a concept masterplan for the integrated 21st century ecofriendly residential/resort destination in Salalah located on a pristine beach front. Khawr Awqad is envisioned as a unique destination with a focus on eco-literacy and education, ecotourism, and sustainable green living.

As opposed to other destinations that just “talk” sustainability, this community actively builds a holistic sustainable environment by preserving and promoting local flora and fauna, offering educational activities, and by encouraging an active involvement in wildlife preservation and the local culture. The mission of the Khawr Awqad Eco Park is the advancement of education for sustainable living. This includes the protection of local flora and fauna, engaging with the natural world, understanding how nature sustains life, and nurturing healthy communities.

The heart and soul of the Khawr Awqad park is a unique bird sanctuary surrounded by a series of boardwalks and winding trails that merges with a public park which encompasses a variety of attractions, which include a botanical garden exhibiting local flora, a mangrove nursery and reforestation zone, an adventure playground, a lake for model boating, an extensive network of bird watching trails, a center for eco-literacy, and a horticultural exhibit for organic farming along with a bio-treatment plant.
The park is structured in five distinct zones, which are dedicated to exploring new ways of how we can care about the places where we live and the people and creatures in them. The recreation park is the first zone and serves as a gateway and destination point for weekenders, families and regional visitors to come and enjoy themselves.

From here, visitors can embark on a stroll through the bird sanctuary and upon return have dinner at the birdwatcher’s restaurant. The center for Eco literacy recognizes schooling for sustainability as a process that fosters abundant living on a finite planet and makes teaching and learning come alive with interactive exhibits.

The unique Adventure Playground teaches children how to build structures from natural materials, or simply to have fun in nature. The Birdwatcher's Restaurant and Trails is a destination point for visitors on the water where families can enjoy bird watching and outdoor dining and embark on their journey around the protected wetland reserve and bird sanctuary.
