    ZHEJIANG ENERGY R&D COMPLEX A
    Hangzhou, China
KABC’s proposal for a research and development complex envisions the new facility as a signature development for Zhejiang Energy Company. The project is located within the Hai Chuang Yuan Community, a larger master plan for a technological park just outside of the city of Hangzhou featuring large green viewing corridors leading to the nearby river. The signature design element expresses functional considerations for the employees inside. Instead of two separate buildings, one continuous work area bridges across the site. KABC achieved optimized floor areas and seamless work flows across laboratories, offices, office suites, and archives. An atrium, a three-story tall indoor garden, and a sunken courtyard, all fitted with a double layered facade, allow daylight into the building while reducing demand on mechanical ventilation. The bridge additionally establishes a gateway at a main entrance into the research campus and enhances the green corridor. Landscape connections between the office and laboratory buildings tie the complex into one whole community. Programmed exterior spaces provide pleasant pedestrian experiences throughout the site and along paths leading into the building. Modifications to the original flat ground plane use earth displaced during construction and create hills to allow for nuanced zones for different outdoor recreation and enjoyment. Some areas will be better suited for Tai Chi, while others will work better for personal relaxation and contemplation.
