A public / private conversation
at the 2009 Venice Bienalle
At the 2009 Venice Biennale Anna Klingmann held a discussion with Mishaal Al Gergawi as a part of the United Arab Emirates pavilion, the Kiosk for Useful Knowledge. The art installation designed by Hannah Hurtzig hosted "5 Dialogues on Nation Building." It was comprised of series of public conversations between leaders in the development of the UAE cultural panorama.

The discussion between Anna and Mishaal covered how to integrate arts into a community through architecture and development, and the difficulties with planning a community to organically foster artistic growth. It was originally a private, unchoreographed conversation that was recorded in a studio and then later broadcast publicly in the pavilion. Visitors can watch these discussions which are played on parallel video screens displaying one member of the discussion. Mishaal al Gergawi is Projects and Events Manager at the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority. He previously worked at HSBC and Deutsche Bank as an investment banker. He publishes on a regular basis on socioeconomic, urban and cultural interests.

Hannah Hurtzig is a Berlin-based Director and Dramaturg who has long been engaging in interdisciplinary research on "learning and un-learning, knowledge and non -knowledge". Hurtzig specializes in "production room installations", in which the "narrative formats of knowledge transfer are tried and presented".
